The Astrophysics Group is currently offering PhD studentships starting in October 2012, for research projects in astrophysics, leading to a PhD degree from the University of Bristol. The Group offers a certain number of studentships funded by or the University to suitably-qualified students (usually with a first class or upper second class degree). While the number of such studentships is necessarily limited, the Group may also take well-qualified self-funded students.
In addition, we offer a masters by research degree (MSc) for self-funded full or part-time students on an ad hoc basis.
Use the links below for more details on the courses, and the research projects available, and follow to see examples of where our former PhD and MSc students have moved on to.
Our main open day will be on Wednesday 1st February 2012. Applications for our PhD or Masters by Research degrees that are received at any time will considered, but we encourage you to apply early and come and meet us at our open day.
STFC funded PhD. studentships may be undertaken with any of the members of staff of the Astrophysics group - follow the links for information about and . Possible research projects are summarised .

In addition to our standard STFC studentships, we expect to offer one studentship to be jointly supervised by members of staff in Bristol and at Macquarie University's . Supervisors may also include astronomers from the (AAO). Topics will be those in which Bristol, Macquarie and/or AAO have common research interests, and are described in more detail . Students will be jointly funded and can expect to spend half of their time in Sydney. Please contact us for more information. |

We offer a one year masters by research MSc degree for self-funded students, and currently have several such students working in the group. More details on the course and some possible projects are available .
Informal discussions about research topics in the Group can easily be conducted by e-mail to the appropriate staff members. A visit to Bristol to find out more about the Group may also be useful, and can be arranged when we have received the application form.
