The Bristol Particle Physics group is one of the oldest in the country and currently is made up of 10 full time academic staff, 9 research assistants and 14 PhD students. You can "meet" all the group members on the People page.
Particle Physics is all about understanding the fundamental building blocks of matter and how they interact with each other. To do this modern Particle Physicists build large experiments where particles are made to smash into one another. Detectors are built around where these collisions occur, and the particles resulting from the interaction are studied.
Now is a very exciting time in Particle Physics. A new collider called the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) will be turned on at CERN at the end of 2009, with a long high-energy run in 2010. It will study Particle Physics at energies far greater than previous generations of colliders. The Bristol Particle Physics group is involved in two experiments that will run on the LHC: CMS and LHCb. We are also involved in a variety of research and development projects for future experiments. You can find out what we do on these experiments on our Research page.
