There's a re-shuffle and general tidy-up of the Public Understanding of Science website going on at the moment. Please be patient while this goes on. Almost nothing is going to be deleted things might be in a different guise than before. If you have any questions, comments or requests, please email phys-pp-outreach@bristol.ac.uk.

Cosmic Ray Detector

The Portable Cosmic Ray Detector: Cosmic rays are fast-moving particles that bombard the earth from outer space. The PortableCosmic Ray Detector allows us to view cosmic rays from the comfort of our lecture theater or class-room. The detector reveals the presence of cosmic ray muons and electrons; it can also be used to view particles produced by a radioactive source. The detector is a hand-held, particle-tracking detector based on scintillating glass, fiber optic plate technology.

 affordable cosmic ray detector

The Affordable Cosmic Ray Detector:  Particle physics is part of every physics syllabus in the United Kingdom. Unfortunately not many students get to see a particle detector in action (1st hand) mainly because the cost of the detector is too expensive for the use of a typical classroom. Our aim is to design and make an affordable detector for use in schools.
