star The Particle Physics Masterclass at the University of Bristol

Bristol's Particle Physics Masterclass events will take place on both 27th and 28th March 2012

Other institutions holding Masterclasses can be found at Particle Physics UK.

We invite 6th formers studying physics, and their teachers, to experience the excitement of this subject at first hand.

The day will be a mixture of talks and PC-based practical sessions. The practical sessions will allow students to make their own measurements of particle tracks, using a software package designed for schools, and to try their hand at identifying what is happening in particle collisions recently recorded at CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Geneva. University researchers and PhD students will be on hand to help, answer questions, and will give a series of short talks on recent developments in the field. We shall be highlighting some of the latest developments in research in particle physics, concentrating on the search for the Higgs particle and on possible small differences between the properties of matter and anti-matter, both in current experiments and in those being planned for the near future.

Booking forms for the Particle Physics Masterclass are available here in either (MS Word or pdf) please complete and return your booking form as soon as possible - please note that these events are very popular and frequently fill up fast.

The programme for the day will start at 10:30 am (registration at 10:00 am) and finish at 4:00 pm. The Programme for 2012 has not yet been finalised, but is like to be similar to the 2010 programme (see below).

Special requirements

Disability Access

Physics was constructed partly in the 1920s and partly in the 1960s and as such can present a challenge for disabled visitors. It is essential therefore that we are made aware of any special requirements as early as possible to enable us to work together to find appropriate emergency evacuation plans (PEEP) to suit each individual. By prior arrangement, disabled parking can be arranged near to the building.

Access to the building is normally via the main entrance in the 1960s wing, off Tyndall Avenue, via steps or a chair lift. By prior arrangement access can also be via the South entrance which has restricted access for security reasons but is fitted with a DDA compliant slope. Our main lecture theatres are over 3 floors (basement, ground and first) and those on floors other than ground floor can be accessed via one of our two lifts, the South lift being a designated evacuation lift.

Emergency egress from the Tyndall or Mott theatres in the 1920s part of the building is normally straightforward but from Powell, Frank and Enderby Theatres in the 1960s end steps must be used to reach road level and special arrangements may be required for those with mobility issues.

Passage between the North and South ends of the building along the ground floor corridor is restricted for anyone with a pacemaker as there is the possibility of strong magnetic fields. It is important that we are made aware of such cases so that alternative, safer routes can be found.

Dietary Requirements

Please also inform us of any students with special dietary requirements (gluten free or allergies in particular) as we can arrange refreshments for them, but will require prior notice in order to do so.
