School of Physics

Physics is at the very heart of scientific discovery - from the nature of matter to the origin of the Universe. It is also a fundamental driver in the world economy - many of tomorrow's technologies will emerge from today's physics.

We operate at the leading edge of research and have a long and distinguished history. Several Nobel Laureates, including Cecil Powell and Nevill Mott, were members of Bristol Physics and our current teaching staff includes researchers who are world-leaders in their fields.

We push forward the frontiers of knowledge: from particle physics to cosmology and astrophysics; from the investigation and manipulation of condensed matter and bio-molecules at the nano scale, to pioneering the new discipline of quantum information science.

The School is part of one of the UK's elite centres for scientific research and teaching. Our students are continually challenged and develop in an environment that is enriched by the world-leading research carried out here and in the other Schools in the Science Faculty.
