It is the electrons in materials which govern many interesting and useful properties, from how metals conduct electricity and heat to more exotic phenomena such as magnetism and superconductivity. I study the behaviour of electrons in materials by annihilating them with positrons (which are the anti-matter partners of electrons) and measuring the radiation that is produced. It is then possible to compare reality with the predictions of quantum mechanics.
