We use simple and inexpensive methods, especially electrochemical deposition (electrodeposition), to prepare ultrathin films and nanostructures with unique physical properties. We are especially interested in magnetic systems, for example studying interactions between magnetic nanoparticles, and electron transport in devices combining magnetic and organic materials. We also study the surface physics aspects of electrodeposition, for example to study the origin and evolution of surface roughness, and are developing new in-situ optical techniques for this work. The image shows a transmission electron micrograph of part of a nanowire consisting of alternating layers of a ferromagnetic and a non-magnetic metal, each only a few nm thick. Similar wires can show giant magnetoresistance of up to 55% at room temperature. (Image: Dr Paul Evans)
