Entry RequirementsPhysics is a mathematical science and applicants to our programmes will have demonstrable strengths in both physics and mathematics. We would expect to see high grades in science and mathematics subjects as well as English at GCSE level. Each application is individually considered and our offers are made on merit and in accordance with the widening participation policy as outlined in the University's . We do not discriminate against any applicant. We offer the majority of our applicants the chance to come to Bristol to see the School of Physics and the University. Our typical offers are indicated below but these may vary according to individual circumstances and the result of your visit.
Our typical A-level offer for single honours Physics courses and for joint honours Mathematics and Physics or Physics and Philosophy is AA in Maths and Physics and B in a third subject. We take account of both the appropriateness of the additional subject(s) offered and the grades predicted or obtained. We do not accept either General Studies or Critical Thinking as entrance qualifications.
Please contact the , before applying if you have any doubts about your qualifications.
We are happy to consider candidates with other qualifications such as European Baccalaureate, French Baccalaureate, International Baccalaureate and Irish Leaving Certificate. We normally expect Scottish applicants to have taken Advanced Highers and would ask for similar grades and subjects to those required for A level candidates.
Applications from overseas students are encouraged, and many international qualifications are acceptable for our undergradute programmes. The University provides special support for overseas students and advice if additional English language skills are required. The web pages give helpful advice and include country-specific information. You are also most welcome to contact the by mail, email or telephone to discuss your qualifications.
There are no formal entry requirements but you must demonstrate the motivation and ability to succeed, and have some basic grounding in mathematics and science (for example good passes at GCSE or through workplace experience). Applicants to whom we are considering making an offer will be asked to attend an interview and to take an aptitude test before we make a final decision.
Please note this programme is not a foundation programme and is not suitable for applicants who have taken A-levels (or equivalent) in either Maths or Physics, or both.
