The artwork 'Field'

Richard Box is a sculptor who worked with us in Physics for two years from 2002-2004, and was funded by the Leverhulme Trust. Whilst he was with us he created the now famous work "FIELD", an installation of 1301 fluorescent tubes planted in a field near Bristol, and powered by the electric field between the high voltage power lines and the ground. There are two framed prints of the work in the entrance foyer of the School, and Richard has donated a number of prints in the main stairwell.

Simon Thomas was the artist-in-residence with us for two years, 1998-2000, and was funded by the Gulbenkian Foundation. He created the artwork "Stretching a Point " which fills the stairwell, and which was paid for by anonymous donation, and the "Rotating Concentric Circles" on the landing, donated by the artist. He created the cone-like sculpture in honour of Paul Dirac, a one-time student at Bristol, which sits outside Explore@Bristol, and which was commissioned by Institute of Physics Publishing (the publishers of Physics World ). It is built up from layers of crosses that become progressively shallower.

Simon Haddock worked with us as an artist-in-residence from 1995-1997, and was funded by a Wingate Fellowship. He painted the screen in the Enderby Room, and there are 2 cartoons of this mural in the central stairwell between the ground and basement floors of the Department.
